In addition to being the largest fully-functioning musical instrument in the world, the Wanamaker Organ also holds an important place in the musical history of the United States. Alexandre Guilmant played more than 40 recitals on this organ when it was first displayed at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. The instrument already had more than 10,000 pipes and its cost bankrupt the builder. In 1909, Philadelphia merchant-prince John Wanamaker bought the instrument for his new Philadelphia emporium. Thirteen freight cars were required to ship the entire instrument. Wanamaker then opened a private pipe-organ factory in the store attic, employing up to 40 full-time employees to enlarge the instrument. More than 18,000 pipes were added to the organ by 1930, bringing the total number of pipes today to 28,677 (463 ranks).

Charles-Marie Widor's Symphony No. 6 for organ and orchestra (included on this disc) received its American premiere in 1919 on the Wanamaker Organ with the Philadelphia Orchestra directed by Leopold Stokowski. It was dedicated to the organist for the occasion, Charles M. Courboin, and was heard by 15,000 listeners.

- New York Cathedral St-John-the-Divine
- Disque Pro Organo; 7250, 10/2009 [1, 2, 3]; 4/2010 [4, 5, 6], DVD et 2CDS
At the very end of December, 2001, the Great Organ at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York was covered with a coat of ash, like the rest of the Cathedral interior. A devastating fire broke out in early morning hours in an area adjacent to the Cathedral nave, just days before Christmas, 2001. But the Cathedral came back! In the years that followed the fire, the Cathedral interior was beautifully restored. The Cathedral's famous Great Organ - originally dating back to 1910 - was gloriously restored by Quimby Pipe Organs of Warrensburg, Missouri. The restored Great Organ was heard for worship again in November, 2008.

In the 87-minute DVD video program, we see and hear fabulous highlights from each concert in the series, given by GERRE HANCOCK, OLIVIER LATRY, MARILYN KEISER, PETER CONTE, THIERRY ESCAICH and DANIEL ROTH. The video - with its close-up detail of these artists at the console, adds a dimension to the performance that cannot be appreciated in any other way. Artist comments and special remarks from the Cathedral's own Bruce Neswick round out the program. Two CD audio discs and a 32-page booklet are packaged with the DVD, with even more highlights from the Great Organ : Great Artists series.
